This morning, during a sacred moment of worship at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, a gunman opened fire through stained-glass windows into a sanctuary filled with children. Two young lives were taken. Seventeen others—mostly children—were injured. The shooter is deceased. The trauma remains.
We at the Edgewater Gazette join the nation in mourning this unspeakable act of violence. That it occurred during a Catholic Mass, on the first week of school, is not just tragic—it is a desecration of innocence and faith.
We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims, the students and staff of Annunciation, and the Minneapolis community now grappling with grief and disbelief. We also recognize the swift response of law enforcement and emergency personnel, whose courage prevented further loss.
This was not an isolated incident. It was the 287th mass shooting in America this year. And it demands more than thoughts and prayers—it demands resolve.
As a publication rooted in community, conscience, and truth, we call for:
- A national reckoning on school safety and mental health
- Federal support for trauma recovery in affected communities
- Honest dialogue across political lines about gun access and accountability
- A renewed commitment to protecting children—not just in policy, but in practice
We will continue to report with dignity, transparency, and care. We will not sensationalize this pain. But we will not look away.
To the children of Annunciation: you deserved safety. You deserved peace. You deserved to grow up.
May this tragedy awaken not just sorrow, but action.
