Officials at Daytona International Speedway have confirmed that the iconic checkered-flag crosswalks located on International Speedway Boulevard (ISB) will be removed, following a directive from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).
The decision is part of a broader statewide initiative to standardize pedestrian markings and eliminate decorative street art from public roadways. FDOT cited safety concerns and compliance with updated traffic control standards as the basis for the removal.
The checkered crosswalks—long a visual symbol of Daytona’s racing heritage—have greeted hundreds of thousands of fans during marquee events such as the Daytona 500, Rolex 24, and Coke Zero Sugar 400. Their removal marks a shift in how Florida is approaching public roadway aesthetics, echoing recent controversies over the removal of symbolic crosswalks elsewhere in the state.
City officials noted that while Daytona Beach has not received formal notification from FDOT, Speedway representatives were directly informed of the repainting plans.
The timeline for removal remains unclear, and no public comment has been issued by FDOT regarding potential community input or preservation efforts.
