Cindy Shelton-Harris Praises Edgewater’s Defiance of SB180 as 2026 Election Season Heats Up Founder of Edgewater Community News, Kerry B. Lewis, Eyed as Possible Contender for Volusia County Council District 3

Published on 20 August 2025 at 04:00

In a dramatic show of local resolve, the Edgewater City Council voted Monday night to uphold its development moratorium, defying Florida Senate Bill 180 (SB180) and drawing praise from regional leaders and residents alike.

Cindy Shelton-Harris, candidate for Volusia County Council District 3, responded with a passionate statement celebrating the Council’s actions:

> “The City Council of Edgewater has representatives that are FOR THE PEOPLE! Thank you for doing the right thing for your residents and businesses in the city that sits on the water’s edge. CONTINUE YOUR FIGHT!”

The Council’s votes included:
- ✅ Unanimous support to join a coalition opposing SB180
- ✅ Unanimous agreement to collaborate with Volusia County Council on possible amendments
- ✅ 3–2 vote to uphold the city’s moratorium, despite legal threats and warnings from Tallahassee

SB180, passed earlier this year, restricts local governments from enacting or maintaining moratoriums on development following natural disasters. Edgewater’s ordinances were originally enacted to address chronic flooding and overdevelopment concerns. City Attorney Aaron Wolfe warned that the Council’s decision could trigger lawsuits or even removal from office by the Governor.

Shelton-Harris urged other municipalities to follow Edgewater’s lead:
> “LET YOUR EXAMPLE LEAD OTHER FLORIDA CITIES TO JOIN YOU!”

🔥 Election Watch: Kerry B. Lewis Floated as Possible Challenger

As the 2026 election season gains momentum, speculation is swirling around a potential new contender: Kerry B. Lewis, founder and editor-in-chief of Edgewater Community News. While Lewis has not formally declared his candidacy, sources close to the community suggest he is weighing the decision.

Lewis, known for his editorial leadership and community advocacy, would bring a unique blend of media savvy, nonprofit experience, and spiritual leadership to the race. His platform—if announced—could center on transparency, youth empowerment, and sanctuary-based governance.

Shelton-Harris, a semi-retired insurance agent and longtime resident of New Smyrna Beach, has already launched her campaign with a focus on flood protection, infrastructure reform, and local autonomy.

District 3, which includes Edgewater, New Smyrna Beach, and surrounding areas, is currently represented by Danny Robins, who is expected to seek re-election.
