Beyond the ordinary

Edgewater, FL — A powerful new movement is taking shape in Florida as the Florida Youth Council prepares to officially kick off by the end of October. Designed to empower young voices and foster intergenerational collaboration, the Council promises to be a transformative space where youth and adults work side by side to shape the future of their communities.

“This Council is about more than just representation—it’s about activation,” said Kerry B. Lewis, CEO of Edgewater Community News and founder of the Florida Youth Council Foundation. “We’re creating a space where young people can lead, speak up, and be heard. And we’re inviting adults to join them—not to take over, but to support and mentor.”

The Council’s core mission is to provide a platform for youth leadership, civic engagement, and community-driven solutions. Members will have opportunities to participate in policy discussions, launch local initiatives, and collaborate across generations to address pressing social issues. With its inclusive membership model, the Council welcomes both youth and adults who share a commitment to empowering the next generation.

Though still in its early stages, Lewis emphasized that the Council is poised for growth. “This is only the beginning,” he said. “We envision a Florida where youth councils are not just local—they’re statewide. Where young leaders are not just invited to the table—they’re building the table.”

Already, the initiative is gaining traction among educators, nonprofit leaders, and community organizers who see the Council as a vital tool for civic renewal and youth empowerment.
