In the wake of the tragic death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood issued a powerful and emotional statement condemning the violence and calling for unity in a deeply divided nation.
“What we’ve witnessed is another horrific assassination attempt in the political arena,” Chitwood wrote. “It’s heartbreaking and shocking. I know prayers seem empty at a time like this, but I can only pray that Charlie Kirk survives to go home to his young family.”
Kirk, 31, was shot while speaking at Utah Valley University during a Turning Point USA event. He later died from his injuries, leaving behind his wife and two young children. The suspect remains at large, and federal authorities are assisting in the investigation.
Chitwood’s statement emphasized the importance of civil discourse and the role of law enforcement in protecting democratic values: “No matter how you feel about anyone’s opinions or political activities, we have to come together and agree that in America we settle our political differences through discourse, debate, and at the ballot box.”
He continued, “This heinous act is another eye-opening reminder that we in law enforcement must stay alert and attuned to all potential threats. These acts of violence are not only a threat to innocent lives, but to our very way of life in America.”
In a follow-up message, Chitwood acknowledged Kirk’s passing: “I know since I posted this we’ve learned he didn’t make it, and now his wife will raise their two young kids without their father. Praying for them, and for our divided country, even though it will take a lot more than prayer.”
Sheriff Chitwood’s words echo the sentiments of leaders across the country who have condemned the attack and called for an end to political violence. As the investigation continues, Kirk’s death serves as a sobering reminder of the fragility of civil discourse and the urgent need for unity.
