Fendrick “Fen” Gabaud, a 40-year-old firefighter/EMT candidate, tragically passed away on August 22, 2025, shortly after completing a pre-employment physical agility test with Flagler County Fire Rescue. Gabaud had recently graduated from Daytona State College’s Firefighter Minimum Standards and EMT program and previously completed the police academy in 2019. He was preparing to begin his dream career in public service when his life was cut short.

According to officials, Gabaud successfully completed the rigorous physical test at the fire tower in Bunnell, Florida, which included stair climbs, hose lifts, and manikin drags. After removing his gear, he reported feeling unwell and experienced shortness of breath. Paramedics on site rendered immediate aid, but he became unresponsive and was later pronounced deceased at AdventHealth Palm Coast.

Born in Palm Beach County and raised in St. Lucie County, Gabaud was a gifted athlete and a passionate sports fan. He moved to Volusia County in 2003, attended Bethune-Cookman University, and quickly became a beloved member of the community. His devotion to fitness was matched only by his loyalty to the Miami Hurricanes and Baltimore Ravens.

More than his professional aspirations, Gabaud was a devoted husband to his high school sweetheart, Alicia, and a proud father to Aaliyah (10) and Leo (6). He never missed a moment to support his children and was known for his radiant smile and uplifting spirit.

Though he had not yet officially begun his career as a firefighter, Gabaud was embraced by the firefighter brotherhood. His dedication, strength, and heart for service were evident to all who trained alongside him.
