A 14-year-old boy named Hunter is recovering after a harrowing e-bike crash on the first day of school that left him trapped under a vehicle in Deltona. The incident occurred around 9 a.m. on August 11 at the intersection of Howland Boulevard and Roble Lane, where Hunter was struck and dragged approximately 15 feet by a Kia Soul while crossing in a marked crosswalk.

Thanks to three critical factors, Hunter survived what could have been a fatal accident:
1. His helmet, which was visibly crushed in the crash, absorbed the brunt of the impact and is credited by medical staff with saving his life.
2. A passing tow truck driver, along with other Good Samaritans, stopped and physically lifted the vehicle off Hunter, allowing first responders to reach him quickly.
3. Rapid emergency response, including air transport via trauma alert to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando, ensured Hunter received urgent care.

Hunter was conscious at the scene and is now in stable condition, expected to make a full recovery. He attends STEAM Academy, a private school located just a mile from the crash site.

Volusia Sheriff's Office deputies met with Hunter and his family this week, bringing gear and support as the teen begins his long road to recovery. The family expressed deep gratitude to the first responders, medical staff, and especially the unidentified tow truck driver. They are eager to meet him and say thank you personally.

🚨 Safety Reminder for Parents and Riders
Hunter’s mother shared that eight other children were hospitalized with e-bike injuries around the same time. As e-bikes grow in popularity, so do the risks. Parents are urged to explore safety-enhancing apps that offer:
- Location tracking
- Geo-fencing to restrict riding zones
- Speed caps
- Helmet detection
- Communication tools for constructive dialogue with young riders

The Volusia Sheriff’s Office also emphasized the importance of helmet use, situational awareness, and safe riding habits—especially for minors navigating busy intersections.
