Keely Farms Dairy Faces Scrutiny Amid Conflicting Agency Actions

Published on 19 August 2025 at 17:05

In a developing controversy that has sparked concern among food rights advocates, Keely Farms Dairy in Florida finds itself at the center of a public health dispute—without ever receiving a formal allegation or inspection.

🧬 What Happened

Keely Farms Dairy, a licensed livestock feed provider under the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS), has come under fire from a different agency: the Florida Department of Health (DOH). On August 7, 2025, the DOH issued a press release alleging that “recent severe cases” of E. coli and Campylobacter were “linked to” the farm—without notifying the farm directly, conducting an inspection, or testing its milk.

The Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund (FTCLDF), which advocates for independent farmers, has raised alarms over the DOH’s handling of the situation. According to FTCLDF, the DOH failed to perform a root cause analysis and has not provided Keely Farms Dairy with any written communication identifying a specific issue. The farm only received a voicemail from the DOH on August 14—seven days after the press release—following intervention by a Florida legislator.

Independent lab tests commissioned by Keely Farms Dairy reportedly show no trace of the pathogens cited by the DOH.

🛡️ FTCLDF’s Response

“The Florida Department of Health’s actions are unusual, confusing, and frankly troubling,” said Alexia Kulwiec, executive director of FTCLDF. “If the Department had evidence that Keely Farms Dairy sold contaminated raw milk for livestock feed, it would be taking serious action against the farm. Instead, the Department is attacking this farm with damaging publicity.”

Kulwiec emphasized that FTCLDF has worked with many local health departments and found the DOH’s approach to be inconsistent with standard investigative procedures.

🔍 What’s Next

Keely Farms Dairy has pledged to cooperate with the Department of Health. However, the farm now faces private litigation stemming from the DOH’s press release—despite the absence of formal charges or verified evidence.

FTCLDF will continue to monitor the situation and provide legal support as needed.
