Florida Governor Eyes New District Map Following Texas GOP Redistricting Victory

Beyond the ordinary

In the wake of Texas Republicans approving a sweeping redistricting map that adds five GOP congressional seats and eliminates several Democratic districts, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is signaling support for a similar move in the Sunshine State. The effort could reshape Florida’s political boundaries well before the next census, intensifying the national battle for control of the U.S. House.

“I think there’s ample justification to do it,” DeSantis said at a recent press event in Bradenton. “My team is reviewing the court’s opinion, and I would look favorably on the Legislature taking it up”.

A Mid-Decade Redistricting Push

Florida’s last redistricting occurred in 2022, when DeSantis vetoed the Legislature’s original map and pushed through a more aggressive version that favored Republicans. That map was challenged in court for violating the state’s Fair Districts Amendment, which prohibits partisan gerrymandering and protects minority voting rights. Though a lower court initially blocked the map, the Florida Supreme Court upheld it last month, paving the way for further changes.

Now, DeSantis and House Speaker Paul Renner have announced the formation of a select committee to explore the legal feasibility of redrawing congressional districts again—potentially expanding the GOP’s current 20–8 advantage in Florida’s House delegation.

Legal and Political Implications

Democrats and voting rights advocates warn that another round of redistricting could violate constitutional protections and disenfranchise minority voters. “Redrawing congressional maps outside of the standard post-census cycle threatens fair representation,” said Rep. Anna Eskamani (D-Orlando).

Republicans argue that recent court rulings give them legal cover to revisit the maps, especially in light of alleged undercounts in the 2020 census. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has proposed using post-enumeration survey data to justify a tailored recount and reapportionment.

National Context

The push in Florida mirrors efforts in other GOP-led states like Texas, where lawmakers recently approved a map that adds five Republican seats and eliminates five Democratic ones—including the district held by Rep. Jasmine Crockett. Former President Donald Trump has publicly encouraged Republican governors to redraw maps to secure House control in 2026.
