Volusia County Sheriff's Office (VSO) detectives have identified and arrested Marquevis W. Chance, 39, in connection with a disturbing assault involving two teenagers near a DeBary community park late Sunday evening.
Deputies were dispatched to the scene around 7:45 p.m. following reports of an armed attack near Lazio Circle and Kalin Street. The victims, a 17-year-old couple, told authorities that an adult male approached them, struck the male teen in the head with a handgun, and pointed the weapon at his girlfriend.
According to the report, the suspect then forced both teens to undress, took their clothing, and fled the area. The male victim was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of a head laceration.
In response to the severity of the incident, VSO deployed additional deputies, K-9 units, Air One, and other tactical resources to canvass the area and support the investigation.
Detectives later determined that the assault was retaliatory in nature, stemming from a prior altercation involving a relative of one of the victims. This revelation added a layer of complexity to the case, suggesting premeditation and personal motive.
On Monday afternoon, Chance voluntarily surrendered at the Volusia County Branch Jail, where he was formally charged with:
- 2 counts of aggravated assault
- 2 counts of aggravated battery with a firearm
- 2 counts of armed robbery
He is currently being held without bond on the armed robbery charges.
