Midtown Manhattan, NY — July 28, 2025
An off-duty NYPD officer who was fatally shot during a violent rampage in Midtown Manhattan on Monday evening has been identified as 36-year-old Didarul Islam, police officials confirmed at a press conference held later that night.
Officer Islam, a father of two with a third child on the way, was working a private security shift at 345 Park Avenue when he was gunned down by a heavily armed assailant. Islam was in uniform at the time, though not on active duty with the NYPD.
🔫 The Incident
According to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, the shooter—identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura of Nevada—arrived at the scene in a black BMW around 6:28 p.m. Armed with an M4-style rifle, Tamura entered the building lobby and opened fire without warning.
Officer Islam was the first to be shot. Tamura then wounded a nearby woman before proceeding to the upper floors of the building, where he killed a security guard and another man. On the 33rd floor, he shot one more individual before turning the gun on himself.

- Building Tenants: The building houses major firms including Blackstone and the NFL’s New York headquarters
🧠 Shooter Profile
Authorities revealed that Tamura had a documented history of mental illness. Prescription medications were found in his vehicle, and investigators are working to determine whether his actions were premeditated or the result of a psychological breakdown.
🕯️ Tributes and Community Response
Mayor Eric Adams called Officer Islam “a true-blue New Yorker” and “a person of faith who gave everything to this city.” NYPD Commissioner Tisch added, “He died as he lived — a hero.”
Governor Kathy Hochul has ordered flags across the state to be flown at half-staff in honor of Islam’s service and sacrifice.
Islam, originally from Bangladesh, was known for his deep involvement in his Bronx community and local mosque. He had served with the NYPD for three and a half years and was widely respected for his humility, dedication, and mentorship within the Bangladeshi-American community.
🏠 A Legacy of Service
Friends and colleagues described Islam as a devoted family man and a quiet leader. “He was the kind of person who made you feel safe just by being there,” said one fellow officer. “He didn’t just wear the badge—he lived it.”
⚖️ Ongoing Investigation
The NYPD and FBI are jointly investigating the shooting, including Tamura’s background, possible motives, and how he obtained the weapon. Security protocols at high-profile buildings are also under review.
