Deltona, FL — A late-night emergency call led deputies to a dramatic and disturbing crime scene on Rabenton Road, where a social media ruse spiraled into a full-fledged armed robbery. Authorities now have four teenagers in custody, all facing a slate of serious charges after allegedly using Instagram to lure an unsuspecting victim into a trap.
🕛 Just before 1 a.m. on Monday morning, a Deltona couple were jolted awake by frantic banging on their front door. A young man had appeared suddenly on their porch, clearly terrified and begging for them to call 911. Within minutes, Volusia County deputies were on the scene and quickly pieced together the disturbing chain of events.
📱 Investigators say the victim believed he was meeting up with a girl he’d been messaging on Instagram. Instead, he found himself face-to-face with four male suspects who emerged from hiding and held him at gunpoint. They stole his iPhone and took the keys to his father’s truck. The coordinated attack was reportedly premeditated, with the Instagram account used as a lure in the ambush.
🚓 Minutes later, a patrol deputy spotted a vehicle idling suspiciously in the middle of a nearby road. Inside were two of the suspects trying to flee the scene via Lyft. A Glock handgun equipped with an extended magazine was recovered from under a seat. The remaining two suspects were apprehended without incident after surrendering at the house where the staged meeting had been set up.
🔒 The accused teens include:
- Luis Torres (15) — Already under court supervision and wearing an adult ankle monitor related to prior charges. A warrant out of Seminole County adds to his growing record.
- Anthony Davis Jr. (16)
- Jayson & Josue Vargas (17) — Identical twins allegedly central to the setup
All four are charged with armed robbery, armed kidnapping, and armed burglary of a vehicle. In addition, Jayson Vargas faces firearm-related charges connected to the recovered weapon.
🚨 While the sheriff's office commended deputies for their fast and effective response, the situation has left the community rattled. It also reignites broader concerns about juvenile justice, parenting challenges, and the dangerous double life some teens lead on social media — where a screen name can quickly become a weapon.
📢 Law enforcement officials emphasized the importance of parental vigilance and public awareness. As digital deception becomes increasingly sophisticated, even well-intentioned online interactions can turn deadly. Detectives believe the Instagram account used in the robbery was designed specifically for targeting individuals. It’s still unclear how long the suspects had been operating it.
🗣️ “This wasn’t a spontaneous act,” a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office stated. “This was coordinated and calculated. These individuals set a trap, and thankfully, the victim escaped without physical harm — but the psychological toll is real.”
👀 The case has also highlighted gaps in preventative measures for at-risk youth, particularly in monitoring those already in the system. Luis Torres’ previous charges and ankle monitor did little to deter involvement in the crime, raising questions about existing rehabilitation and supervision strategies.
📞 The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with relevant information to contact Volusia County Crime Stoppers.
